1. Check Your Attic Insulation

2. Look for Air Leaks

Check areas around:

• Attic hatches
• Plumbing
• Electrical fixtures
• Ductwork
• Chimneys
• Recessed lighting

Air leaks can allow warm indoor air into the attic.

3. Check Ventilation

Make sure ventilation pathways are not blocked.

Soffit vents and other ventilation components should remain functional where they are part of the attic ventilation system.

4. Look for Moisture and Frost

Frost, condensation, damp insulation, or water staining can indicate an attic moisture problem.

The source should be identified rather than simply covering the affected area.

5. Inspect for Signs of Ice Damming

Look for:

• Large icicles
• Ice buildup along roof edges
• Water staining
• Recurring winter leaks

These can indicate that further investigation is required.

6. Check Your Attic Hatch

An attic hatch should close properly and provide an effective air barrier between the living space and attic.

An improperly sealed hatch can allow warm air to escape.

7. Check Bathroom Exhaust

Bathroom exhaust fans should vent appropriately rather than releasing warm, humid air directly into the attic.

8. Look for Damaged or Wet Insulation

Wet insulation should not simply be covered with new insulation.

Determine why it became wet first.

9. Check for Uneven Roof Temperatures

Recurring ice dams or large areas of snow melt can be signs that different portions of your roof are experiencing different temperatures.

10. Address Problems Before Winter

If you discover insulation gaps, air leaks, moisture, or ventilation problems, fall is a good time to address them.

Waiting until a winter ice dam or water leak develops can make the problem more difficult.
